What Yannic Fréson 3D is

Yannic Fréson 3D is a 3D printing service for the Heist-op-den-Berg area, between Mechelen, Leuven and Antwerp. It works for private customers, small businesses, makers and designers. It prints supplied files, designs to measure at €60 per hour, and makes replacement parts, prototypes, small batches and prints in up to four colours.

Your file, the design, the printing and the parcel are handled together, with a fixed point of contact from request to delivery. There is no helpdesk and no ticket number.

There are limits too. This is not a service for a thousand parts a week, and resin and metal are not printed. What can and cannot be done is set out plainly on the services page.

What the service stands for

  • Personal and local

A fixed point of contact from request to delivery. In the Heist-op-den-Berg area your order is delivered to your door in person.

  • A designer's eye

Every print is looked at as a design first: which colour goes where, where a seam may sit, how the light falls on an edge. Even for a bracket nobody will ever see.

  • Quick and fairly priced

Ready 3 to 5 working days after your approval, at rates that are public. The smallest order is €10, and the price is fixed before anything is printed.

How it works

  1. You send a file or an idea

An STL, 3MF or STEP, or a photo, sketch or broken part with a few words of explanation.

  2. You get a quote

With a fixed final price, the material and the date. Up to this point it costs nothing.

  3. The printer starts

After your approval the part is printed and cleared of supports.

  4. Your order comes to you

Delivered to your door in the Heist-op-den-Berg area, or by parcel in Belgium and the EU.

The equipment

Yannic Fréson 3D prints on one Bambu Lab P1S with AMS, an enclosed FDM printer with a build volume of 256 × 256 × 256 mm. The printer works with a 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.2 mm layers as standard, and switches between four spools of filament by itself. Thirteen colours of PLA are on the shelf.

How large and how fine a print can be

The largest part Yannic Fréson 3D prints in one go fits within 256 × 256 × 256 mm. Anything larger has to be printed in sections that fit together afterwards. The layers of 0.2 mm stay visible, the smallest detail is about one line width, so 0.4 mm, and dimensions always deviate slightly with FDM.

An FDM printer lays lines of plastic next to and on top of each other. That explains the three things that surprise people most:

  • Layers. A sphere is really a staircase of 0.2 mm discs. On a vertical wall you see fine horizontal lines.
  • Overhangs. The printer cannot start in mid-air. Whatever sticks out a long way gets supports, which are removed afterwards and leave a rougher face behind.
  • Direction. A print is stronger along the layers than between them. The orientation on the build plate is therefore a choice, not chance.

A part that fills the whole build plate is also a long print: allow about a day. The pricing page has a worked example of one. Parts that have to fit together get clearance in the design. A measured tolerance will only be published once it has been checked on a series of test pieces.

About the images on this site

For now the images on the Yannic Fréson 3D website are 3D renders of its own designs, not photographs. They show the shape and the colours of the filament that is in stock, but not the layers of a real print. Photographs of the printed pieces will follow and replace the renders.

It says so here because that is more honest than keeping quiet about it. A render is always a touch too perfect. A real print has 0.2 mm layers, a seam and sometimes a character of its own. There are no customer projects or reviews on the site yet either: they will appear when they exist, and not before.

The maker is also a photographer; that work is at yannicfreson.be. It explains why the portfolio holds a suspicious amount of storage for photographic film.
