3D printing in Leuven: do it yourself, have it done, or go industrial
Leuven has several 3D printing options: FabLab Leuven and the High Tech Lab at Maakleerplek for people who want to do it themselves, and Materialise for industrial work. Yannic Fréson 3D sits in between: a service that prints your part in 3 to 5 working days, in up to four colours, designs it too and ships it to Leuven.
| Where | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| FabLab Leuven | You email an STL file; printed on a Prusa MK4 or a resin printer, priced by weight, usually ready within a week. | Anyone with a print-ready file for whom one colour is enough. |
| High Tech Lab at Maakleerplek | Open makerspace at the Vaartkom, run by volunteers, with 3D printers, a laser cutter and CNC machines. | Anyone who wants to learn to use the machines themselves. |
| Yannic Fréson 3D | Print service that ships to Leuven. FDM in PLA, PETG and ABS/ASA, up to four colours per object, design on request. | Anyone without a file, who wants colour, or needs a part for outdoors. |
| Industrial print companies | Leuven is the home of Materialise, one of the big names in industrial 3D printing. | Metal, medical applications, certified parts and large runs. |
The details about FabLab Leuven and Maakleerplek come from their own websites, consulted on 8 October 2026; check there for the current conditions. On Materialise: Leuven MindGate.
What gets printed for Leuven
Yannic Fréson 3D prints prototypes for a thesis or project, scale-model parts and replacement parts for students, researchers, makers and private customers in Leuven. One example is an enclosure of 120 × 80 × 45 mm for a sensor or circuit board, in PETG, with the lid and the lettering printed in a second colour.
An enclosure like that shows where a small service adds something. The file comes out of your own CAD package, but the screw holes are too tight, the wall is 0.8 mm and the snap rim has no clearance. Before the quote the file is looked at for printability and you hear what would be worth changing; the dimensions and the function of the design remain yours. Changes drawn for you are design work at €60 per hour, billed per 15 minutes.
In a university city you also need to know what is not on offer. No resin, no metal, no SLS, no 3D scans and nothing that has to be sterile, biocompatible or certified. For a test rig on the lab bench, FDM plastic is fine. For something that goes into a patient or a pressure vessel, you ring somebody else.
The rates and worked examples are on the pricing page; the minimum order is €10.

How a print gets to Leuven
Yannic Fréson 3D ships every order for Leuven by parcel, to an address or a carrier's pickup point in Leuven, Heverlee, Kessel-Lo, Wilsele or Wijgmaal. The print is ready 3 to 5 working days after you approve the quote; the carrier's delivery time comes on top. The shipping cost is listed separately on the quote.
A pickup point or parcel locker is the cheapest option and practical if nobody is in during lectures or lab hours. Everything happens online: file or sketch, quote, approval, parcel. If a broken part has to be recreated, photos with a ruler in shot and the main measurements are usually enough; otherwise you send the part by post.
Plan for the post if you have a deadline. A print for a thesis defence on Friday should not be approved on Wednesday. The options and rates are on the page about delivery and shipping.

Questions from Leuven
Can I have a prototype for my thesis in Leuven printed?
Yes, in PLA, PETG or ABS/ASA and up to 256 × 256 × 256 mm per part. Send your STL or STEP file and say what it is for. Allow 3 to 5 working days after your approval, plus shipping to Leuven. For resin, metal or certified parts you need to look elsewhere.
Why order a print by post when Leuven has a FabLab?
Often you need not: with a print-ready file and one colour, FabLab Leuven or Maakleerplek will serve you well. Yannic Fréson 3D makes sense if you have no file, want several colours in one part, need PETG or ASA, or want the part designed for you.
Can I get a quick test print sent to Leuven before a deadline?
For checking shape and fit there is the fast prototype: unfinished, rougher, and ready 1 to 2 working days after you approve the quote if the part prints within a day. Shipping to Leuven comes on top, so mention your deadline in your request. The details are on the page about prototypes and small batches.
