Film Box

The Film Box is a drawer in a sleeve, meant to keep rolls of 35 mm film in one place. Film tends to wander: into a desk drawer, a camera bag, the fridge door next to the butter. The question was whether that one fixed place could also look like what is inside it.

The design. The box has three parts: a sleeve, a drawer and a front plate. The sleeve is 215 mm wide, 88 mm high and 74 mm deep, with chamfered corners. The back is Ivory White, the front Charcoal, with a red line of 1.6 mm between them. On the front plate lies a film strip: four frames with a row of perforations above and below. A red bar 60 mm long is the handle.

What makes it hard. The film strip is not a sticker and not paint. The perforations and frames are inlays 0.6 mm thick, three layers, in a different colour from the plate around them. That is why the front plate prints flat: all the colour changes sit in a few layers instead of running the full height, which keeps the wasted filament small. The sleeve follows the same logic. It prints lying on its back, so white, red and charcoal are three level bands with only two changes. The drawer is one colour and prints upright. A drawer has to slide without rattling. That clearance is only settled by a real print, and no print report exists yet.

About the yellow. In the renders the frames of the film strip are yellow. Yellow is not in stock. So the colours follow the filaments that are, for example Mandarin Orange or Ivory White for the frames, or a colour ordered on request.
