3D design on request
Yannic Fréson 3D, a 3D printing service for the Heist-op-den-Berg area in Belgium, draws a 3D model from a sketch, a photo with dimensions or a broken part, then prints it. Design work costs €60 per hour, billed per 15 minutes, half an hour minimum. Once you approve the design, the print is ready in 3 to 5 working days.

What you get
A model drawn to be printed
Wall thicknesses, fillets and the direction of the layers are part of the drawing. A design that only works on screen is a picture, not a part.
Clear terms on previews
The quote states whether you see the model with its dimensions before the printer starts. Changes are charged per fifteen minutes.
Design and print from one source
Whoever draws it knows what the printer can do. Nothing has to go back and forth between a designer and a print shop.
From sketch to 3D model
A made-to-measure design takes four steps. The first is the most important and the least effort for you.
You say what it has to do
A sketch, a photo with a ruler next to it, a few measurements, or the broken part itself. Say what the part has to fit into or onto as well.
You get an estimate
The quote states the estimated number of quarter-hours of design and the price of the print. You know where you stand before anything starts.
Drawn, then checked by you
The model is built in CAD at the right size. The quote states whether you get a preview to approve and how many rounds of changes are included.
Printing
After your approval the part is printed in the material and colour that suit its use.

A designer's eye, even for a bracket
Function comes first: it has to fit and stay put. Then comes the question of what it looks like, and that need not cost anything extra. A chamfer in the right place or a second colour in a single line turns a fixture into something you do not hide in a drawer. On this card case the relief is in the design, not on a sticker.
What design work costs per hour
Design work at Yannic Fréson 3D costs €60 per hour. It is billed per quarter-hour started, with a minimum of half an hour per job. Redrawing a simple knob, cap or spacer usually takes half an hour. The design cost is listed separately on the quote, next to the price of the print itself.
How long a design takes depends less on its size than on the number of dimensions that have to be right. A box with a lid that clicks shut is more work than a box with a lid that rests on top. An organic shape is more work than a rectangle.
The estimate in your quote is an estimate. If it threatens to run over, you hear about it before it does. Design costs fall outside the quantity discount: drawing does not go faster because you order fifty. The model does only have to be drawn once.

Questions about custom design
All frequently asked questionsWhat do you need from me to draw a part?
The outside dimensions, the position and diameter of any holes, and an idea of what the part fits into. A photo with a ruler or callipers in shot helps a great deal. Having the part itself in hand is the surest way: you can post it, or have it collected from your door in the delivery municipalities.
How many hours of design should I allow for?
For a simple part such as a knob or a cap, usually half an hour, the minimum. Parts with snap fits, screw threads or several components take longer. The estimated number of quarter-hours is in your quote before you decide anything.
Can you modify an existing 3D model?
Yes. A STEP file is the handiest for that, because its dimensions stay editable. An STL is possible too, but small changes take longer there. Moving a hole or adding a name is usually fifteen minutes to half an hour.
Can you make a 3D model from just a photo?
For a technical part with flat faces and round holes, yes, if the photo comes with dimensions. For a face, a figurine or an organic shape, no. That takes a 3D scan, which is not on offer.
