Film Stand

The Film Stand is the successor to the drawer of the Film Box. A drawer stores things, but it does not show what is in it. So the question was how to stand ten cartons of film so that every label can be read without lifting anything.

The design. The whole stand is one plate 4 mm thick, folded five times: a nose at the front, a seat, a step, a second seat, a back rest and a leg that runs back down to the floor. The back row sits 40 mm higher than the front one. Both seats tilt back by 10 degrees, so the cartons lean against the step behind them. Each carton gets 40 mm of width, and five side by side make 200 mm. The stand is 132 mm deep and 65 mm high. It is sheet-metal work, minus the press brake.

What makes it hard. A folded plate is exactly what a 3D printer dislikes printing upright: every seat would be an overhang that needs supports. So the stand prints on its side. The folded outline lies on the build plate and the 200 mm width goes up. Every layer is the same outline, no supports are needed, and the folds become smooth bends with an inside radius of 1.5 mm. The price is a tall print: a thousand layers of 0.2 mm on a wall of 4 mm. Both ends have a 0.6 mm chamfer. This plate gets no grainy texture, so the lines stay crisp.

Where it stands. The seats are drawn to the published size of a film carton, 38 × 38 × 61 mm, not to a measured carton. Whether every make fits equally well is for a print to show. The print file is ready. The images are renders, and the cartons in them are props.

It shows that one colour and one part can be enough when the shape is right. The same stand can be sized for other boxes, cards or small bottles. If you would like something similar, ask for a quote.
